A note To Parents and Potential Applicants from your Parks and Recreation Director:
Please keep in mind that if it's your child who is seeking a job in Recreation, I would
prefer that they handle the application process on their own, the follow-up, the questions about
the position, and the interviews. I will continue to post information regarding the process on
this website so that everyone (parents included) knows where we are in the staffing process for
our Recreation Positions. I have children of my own, so I understand that kids may be nervous
talking to me directly. It all goes into the equation. AND, I have to tell you, in the long
run, your child will be helped more by having to handle all of it on their own. Each year, I
process approximately 200 applications for seasonal work and fill approximately 40 positions.
Thank you for your understanding, and Parents--thank you for helping to coach your child in
this process given these parameters.
I encourage everyone--parents and applicants--to read the FAQ sheet regarding Seasonal
Employment in Recreation. Click HERE to
download the FAQ sheet. (I think this covers most of the questions I have
been getting.) Thank you.
Summer Opportunities:
Stirling Lake Lifeguards: Must be at least 15 years old and
must have the following certifications: American Red Cross (or equivalent) Lifeguarding
Certification; American Red Cross (or equivalent) Community First Aid & Safety, and American
Red Cross (or equivalent) CPR/AED (Professional Rescuer). American Red Cross (or equivalent)
“Waterfront Training”, American Red Cross (or equivalent) “Bloodborne Pathogens” Training a
plus.
Summer Rec Camp Counselors and CIT’s: Summer Rec Counselors must be at least
14 years of age; HOWEVER, given our staffing requirements set forth by the state’s Youth Camp
Standards, we first fill our counselor positions with employees who are at least 18 years of
age first. We hire a number of applicants to assist who are 16 years and older after that. A
certain number of CIT’s (Counselors in Training) are also accepted each year into the program.
As a *guideline, CIT’s are at least 15 years old. Ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate
an ability to work with children well. First aid training, prior experiences as a camp
counselor and/or babysitting a plus. Summer Rec Counselors must be able to commit to work the
full 6 weeks of camp (or whatever the duration of the program is). The CIT position is a
non-paid position that works alongside a counselor. CIT’s earn community service hours and
have more flexibility in their schedules. CIT’s with good performance ratings will receive
priority the following year when staffing any openings for the paid counselor positions.
*Note: 15 years and older is a guideline age for CIT’s. We can accept a CIT at any age because
it is a volunteer position. A candidate that is younger than 15 may still apply but must
understand that we will be strongly considering a candidate’s maturity level at any age and
will be comparing it to the entire pool of applicants. In addition, if accepted as a CIT under
the age of 15, we may not be able to hire the applicant for a paid position the following
year.
Field Hockey Clinic: Instructors needed for Field Hockey Clinic to be held
at Matthew G. Kantor Memorial Park during the summer. Ideal candidates will be at least 16
years of age, have a complete understanding of the game of field hockey, and will be able to
work well with children. Instructors will need to be able to run drills with clinic
participants to teach them the fundamentals of the sport while ensuring that it is done in an
environment allowing for fun while learning. Experience playing on a field hockey team(s)
